Exam results and Confirmation

Step 4: Results

Confirmation for advisers guide 2011 entry (PDF)
This guide is for staff in schools, colleges and careers centres who advise students about applying through CUKAS. It explains Confirmation procedures, and where to find further advice and guidance. There is also a calendar of important dates and our helpline details over the Confirmation period.

When conservatoires receive examination results, they decide whether to confirm guaranteed and reserve conditional offers and reserve unconditional offers. The table below summarises the permissible Confirmation decisions for each type of original offer. The possible Confirmation decisions vary depending on whether the applicant has accepted the offer as their first or second choice.

Confirmation processing and changes to applicant status

TYPE OF ACCEPTED OFFER POSSIBLE OUTCOMES
Guaranteed conditional (GC) Guaranteed unconditional (GU)1 Unsuccessful (R)
Reserve conditional (VC) Reserve unconditional (VU)
Guaranteed unconditional (GU)1
Unsuccessful (R)2
Reserve unconditional (VU) Guaranteed unconditional (GU)1
Unsuccessful (R)2

Notes

  1. When an applicant accepts a guaranteed unconditional offer at their first preference choice, they are 'placed'. They will be sent a letter to confirm their place. When the first preference choice becomes a guaranteed unconditional offer, the second preference choice is automatically rejected.
  2. When the first preference choice is rejected, the second preference choice is automatically up-rated to first preference choice.

Applicants' commitments

Applicants who have accepted a guaranteed conditional offer as their first choice are committed to take up the place or withdraw their application if the conservatoire confirms the place.

Applicants who have accepted a reserve conditional offer as their first choice are committed to go to that conservatoire if a place becomes available and they meet all the conditions of the offer.

If applicants do not obtain a guaranteed place in Confirmation, they cannot apply to any other conservatoires in the same application cycle.

Changed offers

Applicants do not have to take up their places, if conservatoires make one or more of the following changes to the original offer when they confirm the place.

  • Change of course on which the place is offered.

  • Change of year of entry. For example, the place is now offered for deferred entry the following year.

  • Changed point of entry. For example, the place is now offered to start on a foundation year (year zero) rather than the first year of a degree course (year 1).
