Choosing a conservatoire and course

Step 1: Choosing courses

Conservatoires

When you're considering which conservatoire you would like to go to and what course you would like to study, think about where you'll be happy. Would you like to be close to home or live in a different part of the country? Think about what you want - each place and its nearby town will offer something different.

Whatever your criteria, research the conservatoire and its location before applying. Speak to friends, family, advisers and the institution itself for advice, but make sure the final decision is yours.

Courses

You need to apply only to the highest level of course in which you are interested. If you are not sure which level of course you should apply for, please contact the conservatoire direct to discuss.

In general, there is no need to apply for more than one course at any particular conservatoire. So, if you want to study at postgraduate level and are not sure if you are qualified to apply for a postgraduate diploma or a master's degree, you should only apply for the master's degree. Similarly, if you want to study at undergraduate level and are not sure if you are qualified to apply for a foundation degree or a BMus degree, you should only apply for the BMus degree.

The conservatoire will be able to advise you before you apply and also make the final decision about which course would be the most appropriate for you at audition or interview.
