Conservatoires offer their students a wide range of performance opportunities with expert directors, conductors and leaders.
In addition to performing in a conservatoire's own ensembles and programme of events, some conservatoires offer their students the opportunity to undertake paid performance work in external venues, ranging from concert halls and theatres to TV studios, community centres and outdoor festivals. These are sometimes referred to as 'external engagements'.
Some conservatoires are also able to employ their students to work as concert stewards, box office staff (or similar jobs) within their own buildings or halls. Other short-term work may also be available, depending on the conservatoire.
Many students also manage to find paid music-related work through their own contacts and research. This might include work at a local concert hall or venue, or paid performances for local promoters.
These kinds of jobs may not only help with the cost of your education, but can give you valuable professional experience as well. However, you should be careful not to take on so much paid work that you are not able to get the most out of your studies.
