Auditioning

You will normally need to demonstrate your practical ability before a conservatoire can make a decision on your application. The audition process varies between conservatoires and you should check the website(s) of your chosen institution(s) for specific advice.

Performers

If you live in the UK you will be invited to audition in person at your chosen conservatoire(s), regardless of whether or not you are an international student.

If you live outside the UK and cannot attend an audition at the conservatoire, you will normally audition in one of two ways:

  • in person at an international audition centre, if available
  • by an audition recording (audio or video).

Many conservatoires have one or more international audition centres where you may be invited to audition in person. The audition requirements for students attending an international audition centre are normally similar to those for attending an audition at the conservatoire. Performance auditions would usually include two or more contrasting pieces that demonstrate your technique and musicality. You may be asked to play/sing scales, read/sing at sight, and/or take an aural test, all of which help to demonstrate your technical abilities. When conservatoires invite you to audition they will provide advice on what the audition will include and what kind of pieces you should prepare.double bass

The requirements for auditioning by recording can vary from live audition requirements. The conservatoire will give you advice on what you will need to prepare, what kind of recording formats are acceptable and any other requirements, such as certification of your performance as your own. If you are accepted on the basis of an audition recording, you may be asked to give a live confirmation audition prior to registering - check with your chosen conservatoire(s).

Non-performance applicants

Composers and applicants in other non-performance areas are usually asked to submit a portfolio, video or other evidence of ability in place of an audition. If you are applying from overseas, you will not normally have to attend an interview, but you may be asked to submit additional work to support your portfolio. The conservatoires will specify what is required depending on your specialist area.
